[:en]CHISINAU – A court in Moldova’s separatist region of Transdniester has reportedly sentenced a man to jail on espionage charges, RFE/RL’s Moldovan Service reports.
Ion Manole, an activist with the Promo Lex human rights group, said Ilie Cazac was sentenced to 14 years in prison in a trial that Manole described as „totally void of transparency.”
Cazac was arrested by Transdniester’s security forces last year. It’s the second such case in the separatist region recently.
In December, Ernest Vardanean, an independent journalist, was jailed in Transdniester on similar charges for 15 years.
Moldova’s government has repeatedly called for the two to be released, saying the charges against them were false.
